BMES HIGHLIGHT

By Sarah Hurley

Widener’s Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) is a great way for students to get involved with the biomedical engineering community and learn more about what this profession has to offer.

Emily Eisele, who is the current president of the Biomedical Engineering Society, took the time to given insight into BMES and the opportunities the organization has to offer.

What is the Biomedical Engineering Society?

“Biomedical Engineering Society is a chapter of a national organization that provides opportunities and connections for students interested in Biomedical Engineering.”

How can someone get involved with the Biomedical Engineering Society?

“Come to our meetings to learn about future events and activities. Our next meeting is Monday, November 15th at 12pm.”

Do you have any upcoming activities or events?

“Stress Buster - Games Night Dec 1st 7-10pm in the University Center Multicultural Lounge”

What are the benefits of joining the Biomedical Engineering Society?

“We foster connections with industry partners through networking nights and community within Widener between likeminded individuals.”

I also had the change to interview BMES’ executive board members to see why they joined the organization and learn about their favorite memories.

Emily Eisele – President

Why did you decide to join BMES?

I joined to create stronger connections with students and faculty and participate in Biomedical Engineering related events and expand connections with industry partners.

S'more's night, because it was one of the first events post covid and it brought together the larger Widener Community.

“I joined BMES because I wanted to get to know more people in my field.”

“I joined BMES because of the welcoming environment of the club meetings in my freshman year.”

Amelia Wellmon – Secretary

Why did you decide to join BMES?

“I joined because a senior encouraged me to join freshman year, and the meetings were fun.”

What is your favorite aspect or memory of BMES?

“Networking night because I enjoy seeing the models relating to medical devices that industry members bring with them.”

Krysta Bernold - Head of Recruitment

Why did you decide to join BMES?

“As a BME student who started at Widener during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I feel like I lost a lot of the “college experience” that most people talk about, but in the hopes to change that perspective, I joined BMES to learn more about Widener’s BME program, the BME industry and the wonderful people involved in both!”

What is your favorite aspect or memory of BMES?

“Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, I have not been able to be an active member of BMES for long, or attend many BMES events, but my favorite part so far was probably our very first in-person meeting where everyone got together for the first time in almost 2 years, we introduced ourselves, got to know each other and made connections that will hopefully last for a long time!”

“I joined to be able to hold a leadership role, help host events and make connections with peers within the biomedical engineering community.”
