David Johnson Interview
Tell me about how branding is going for you?
I would say it’s going pretty well, definitely made a name for myself, definitely want to upkeep it more in person, not trying to do anything superficial you know or weird. My brand is pretty much myself and that is exactly how I’m trying to stay, been pretty natural since the last time we talked.
Tell me about Everything Neon?
My group is called Everything Neon. Neon stands for never echo others negativity. I’ll be honest doing all this stuff alone is like ridiculous. So I need a group with me and my other artists that will uplift me. There are times when I didn’t want to make music and my friend Goodie or my friend Osei would say “Yo lets make music today.” So I can kinda like start getting out of that area where I don’t want to do anything and the point of the group is literally just like we all make different types of music, we all have unique talents, different sounds.
What kind of music do you make? And what kind of music do you hope to make in the future?
I’m trying to break into R&B now. I feel like a lot of artist do R&B but it’s not the same. It’s very sensual, very sexual, very out there, but there isn’t any love songs. I do want to do R&B and put more of a perspective.
What is the goal of your group now and what is your goal later?
The main goal is for one of us to get enough success to have their own show. I want one of us to be on a flyer saying “Come watch Diege perform.” I want them to be the main act of the performance.
How many people are in your group?
Artist wise we have five artists. Me, Lil Goodie, Osei, Bunchabarz, (insert name here) We’re all from like the Jersey, Philly, Maryland area. We also have Malik he does photography. We also have Sammy, Sammy Shot Ya. He does a lot of the video stuff. We have James, he is like the A&R. He tells us what's going to work and what's not going to work; what to change and what not to change. We’re still adding more new members and everything. We find different people to help us. It’s a blessing to actually have people look at what we're doing.
Do you wish to have your own studio one day?
I am blessed that Widener has given me the access to all this stuff, but I do want to have our own studio for the team.
Have you performed anywhere since the last time?
Since the last time we talked I did a Juneteenth festival in Cherry Hill which was cool. It was the first one. Most recently my team and I performed for this one artist Lil Mop Top who was having a performance. My friend Osei got asked performed on another day at the same venue so that was cool to see. Get more performances and create more content off of that.
Do you have any new music coming out?
I do want to release more music in the near future. Need to find a way to keep my name out there. I have a tendency to drop something, go on a hiatus, and then drop something. It won’t work.
The story behind the latest song Anita?
I listen to old 2000 R&B now. I like R&B but I feel like nobody is making that sound anymore. So I was watching all these documentaries and I made the song back when I was at Widener. I made the song in a few minutes and after a while I was scared to put it out. I sang on songs before, but haven’t sang on a whole song before. I sent it to my one friend and she said this is the one I had to do a video for it and everything and that's how the video came about.
